Research updates since returning to Malawi
December 2007

I was appointed by the Malawi Government to be among the national experts working on the Second National Communication on Climate change to the UN. My assignment is to evaluate the impact of climate change on crops and to assess the vulnerability of rural farmers.
January, 2008
I will be the Principal investigator on a research that aims to come up with organic fertiliser in urban Malawi. In the project, Bunda College will partner with Four Seasons Nursery for the commercial part and the finances from this project will be used to established a Malawi Higher Education Fund for Research and Development for upcoming scientists in Malawi.
February, 2008
I was appointed to be among 25 experts at global scale to come up with a research agenda on climate change and human migration. The first meeting will be held in Munich, Germany in April, 2008.
June 2008
I am a leading expert in a proposal to establish a Masters degree at Bunda (MSc Sustainability-Environment and Development). Other partners are from University of Botswana and University of Leeds. This project has been funded by DFID through the British Council Delphe programme (90,000.00 pounds)
June 2008
I will be among national and international experts undertaking a study on urban shelter studies in Malawi. This study is being commissioned by UN Habitat-Kenya and Malawi.

1. A concept proposal on Vulnerability and ecosystems in Southern Africa has been accepted by NERC (UK) for a full proposal. I will be a co-investigator. Partners are University of Leeds and University of Dar-es-Salaam.
2. Another concept proposal has also been accepted by NERC (UK) developed by University of Glasgow, Bunda, Dar-es-salaam and North West. I will be a partner.
3. In July, I will be participation in the 2008 Summer Acadamy on Environmental migration in Munich, Germany
4. In October, I will also be among international expert at a conference in Bonn Germany on Environmental Migration.
5. I will be working with FAO, Department of Meteorology and Department of Economic Planning and Development on climate change related project from September, 2008. In this project we would like to undertake studies on crop and livestock suitability, participatory climate change risk assessment and identifying best practices from two projects funded by the Norwegian Government.
